Seriously?!

Have you seen the new Verizon commercial for the LG Dare phone? The one with the fight cropped pit bulls chained up in the junk yard? Here's a clip in case you've missed it:

As a pit bull lover, hell as a DOG lover, I'm BEYOND pissed about this marketing tactic. I also have a hard time believing that, in light of the relatively recent Michael Vick scandal, ANYONE with one ounce of marketing sense thought this approach would be a good one.

If you're half as appalled as I am, please consider emailing Verizon to let them know that their commercial is offensive. The link below will take you to a list of executive managers' profiles. Each profile will have a link at the bottom that will take you to an email form. I suggest, at the very least, contacting Lowell McAdam (CEO), Jim Gerace (VP of Corporate Communications) and Mike Lanman (Director of Marketing).

Emotionally attached...

to a dog's tail.

Notice anything different about Ralphie? Here's a hint...

http://herringbones.blogspot.com/2008/04/we-call-this-happy-tail.html

his tail used to be about 7" longer than it is now. Yep, it was docked on Friday after MUCH discussion, research and many tears on my part. The end just wouldn't heal and it was starting to get infected. Ralphie hasn't missed a beat since the surgery...I, on the other hand, my need long term therapy.

I'm so anti docking and cropping that it's hard for me to truly be okay with our decision...even though it was for a medical reason and even though I KNOW it was the best decision for Ralphie. Pit bull docks and crops are generally done to make the dog look more bad ass...and that is generally the result. Ralphie still has half a tail...so I guess that makes him only half a bad ass, right?

Then and Now

Then (April 2008):

Now (July 2008):

I just can't get over the difference. I can't. And every time I pass the spot on the road where I first saw him, I get a huge lump in my throat.
Everyone who's ever said, "Oh God, I'd NEVER have a pit bull!" or my personal favorite, "Oh God, I'd NEVER let my children around a pit bull!" should meet Ralphie. He didn't get the media's memo that pit bulls are supposed to be viscous and eat children. He's the sweetest, most gentle, laid back dog I've EVER been around - and we all know I've been around a LOT of dogs!

Meet Mercedes

Her family moved away and left her in their yard to fend for herself. It takes a special kind of asshole to do that. Thankfully, the neighbors were kind enough to feed her and contacted several rescue groups about helping her. She's now been vetted (probably the first time in her life) is being spayed today and will return to her foster home tomorrow. She's a SUPER sweet girl!
